Which Coffee Shop Will Fit You?

by Lee Kyoung Yeon, Lee Eun Kyung

The streets around Ewha are overflowing with coffee shops and students are often confused about which coffee shops are better. We decided to help you out by looking at the differences between the coffees on offer in the various shops and also comparing the side menus.

Comparing the Coffees

As the coffee market is expanding, consumers’ coffee tastes are getting gentrified and diversified. Therefore, the competition between coffee shops has been growing a lot. We are going to introduce the different flavor ‘point’ of the various coffee shops.

Holly’s Coffee – Holly’s is known for its soft and deep flavor. The secret is their special method of roasting and their use of double shots of expresso as the basis for their coffees. The roasting is done to an optimum level to lessen the sour and bitter taste and the double shots give the coffee a deep flavor. This coffee flavor is popular among those in the 20~30 age group.

Starbucks - Starbucks chooses dark-roasting, which is to roast coffee beans for over 15 minutes with a strong fire, and uses single shots. If the roasting time gets longer, the bitter and sweet tastes of coffee beans increase, and the sour taste and caffeine decrease; for these reasons, coffees with caramel scent and bitter taste in the end are the main feature of Starbucks. This kind of favor goes well with Caffe lattes and Cappuchinos.

Caffebene - Caffebene chooses a medium-roasting method. Coffees made from medium-roasting usually taste soft and are a little sour. Caffebene advertises that their way of roasting makes their coffee delicious even in cold states.

Angelinus – Angelinus emphasizes their taste of coffees made through a pure roasting system, in which time and temperature are controlled exactly by the computer. This system allows them to serve coffees that are rich in taste and without any burnt smell.

Comparing the side menus

Here, we selected the most popular side order from each of the coffee shops.

1.     Hollys Coffee: Honey Baguette Ball.
This is popular among young women because of its sweet taste. This is baguette bread with honey, butter and cheese. If you drink cappuchino and eat this you can experience paradise. It means they are well-suited to each other because cinnamon powder in cappuchino reduces the baguette’s sweetness.

2.     Starbucks : Scone
Starbucks scones are served with a choice of butter, jam or cream – according to your own taste. This really goes well with Lattes.

3.     Caffe bene : Carmel Cinnamon Bread.
These are very sweet and soft compared to any other side orders. The Soft bread, thick cinnamon scent and fresh cream makes it very sweet so it goes well with Americano coffee.

4.     Angelinus Coffee : Fruit Waffle
This is very well known and popular. It is served with a lot of fruits and soft whipping cream. So you can taste the sweet and sour flavor at once.
